Cornwallis Orchard

The Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard was first planted on Saturday March 12th 2016 and has been transformed into a community asset and a legacy for the future.

There has been a variety of fruit trees planted across the site including Braeburn, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Keelie, Blue Permain, Baker Delicious, Coxes Orange Pippin and Worcester Permain Apples, Stellar and Sunburst Cherry, Victoria Plum and Comice, William and Conference Pear trees with a variety of fruit bushes including Red and Green Gooseberries, Redcurrant and Blackcurrant which have been planted in raised beds. The orchard also features a wild flower meadow area which not only will bring a flash of colour to the area but will also provide a valuable resource to Bees and other insects.

In March the seating area will be returned to the orchard and the site is also home to two public sculptures that have been relocated from Commercial Road.

The Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard provides a much needed green oasis in the centre of the city for people to enjoy with their families for picnics.  This is a future project, a place where free fruit will be grown for local people in the meadow area and raised beds.  A place where people can volunteer to help water the trees and grow fruit bushes and flowers to help the bees come and pollinate the trees.

Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard is in the second stage of growth and we have planted the next phase of trees, which includes pears, plums and cherries of different varieties.

We have got going through the help of voluntary donations and grants so far and would like to provide so much more in the future through working with the local community garden and Portsmouth & Southsea tree wardens.

Our hopes for the future are to provide a local resource for residents free.  This would include free training, horticultural knowledge and a local history project for young people and to get the younger members of the community involved.  We will be working with the local schools and are hoping to work with Portsmouth university too.  We hope to bring the local community together more to look after this lovely community asset.
